Who we are

Ulysses Companion is operated by Riverrun Labs (“we”, “us”, “the seller”). When you use this website or purchase a Library Pass, you are contracting with Riverrun Labs.

Acceptance of these terms

By creating an account or continuing to use Ulysses Companion, you agree to these Terms & Conditions. If you do not agree, please do not use the service. You must be at least 18 years old, or of legal age in your jurisdiction, to make a purchase.

What the service is

Ulysses Companion is a plain-English reading guide to James Joyce’s Ulysses: episode guides, character and theme pages, paragraph analysis, and the Reading Room — a 180-day guided reading journey with daily commentary and audio summaries. Some content is free; Days 31–180 of the Reading Room require a paid Library Pass.

Acceptable use

You must not misuse the service. In particular, you must not:

  • Use the service for any unlawful purpose, fraud, or spam;
  • Infringe intellectual property rights of Riverrun Labs or others;
  • Interfere with the security or operation of the service — including introducing malware, probing or scanning for vulnerabilities, or scraping the site or its content in bulk;
  • Attempt to bypass access controls, the Reading Room paywall, or any other technical limit.

Intellectual property

Riverrun Labs owns the service and all original content on it — including the commentary, guides, paragraph analysis, audio summaries, software, documentation, and branding. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to access and use the service for personal, non-commercial reading. You may not copy, resell, redistribute, or reverse engineer any part of the service.

Ulysses by James Joyce is in the public domain; our commentary, guides, and analysis are our original work and are not.

Your account

You are responsible for keeping your account credentials confidential and for all activity under your account. You must provide accurate information when registering and keep it up to date.

Payments and the Library Pass

The Library Pass is a one-time purchase that unlocks Days 31–180 of the Reading Room for the lifetime of your account. Prices are shown at checkout and include any applicable taxes.

Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle provides all customer service inquiries and handles returns.

Payment, billing, tax, cancellation, and refund mechanics are governed by Paddle’s Buyer Terms. Our refund terms are set out in our Refund Policy.

Service level

We work hard to keep Ulysses Companion available and accurate, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free performance. We may update, pause, or withdraw parts of the service from time to time.

Warranties and liability

The service is provided “as is”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all implied warranties, including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Nothing in these terms excludes liability for fraud, death, or personal injury where the law does not allow it.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, consequential, or special damages — including loss of profits, data, or goodwill — and our aggregate liability to you is capped at the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.

Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate your access if you materially breach these terms, fail to pay amounts due, pose a security or fraud risk, or repeatedly or seriously violate these policies. When access ends, content tied to your account may be deleted; you may contact us within 30 days of termination to request an export of any personal data we hold about you.

General

These terms are governed by the laws of Ireland, and the courts of Ireland have jurisdiction over any dispute, unless mandatory consumer law in your country gives you different rights. You may not assign these terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger or acquisition. We are not liable for delays caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
